Economy chiefs meet, talk Euro

The Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Pravind Jugnauth met Governor of the Bank of Mauritius Rundheersing Bheenick at the Ministry of Finance yesterday afternoon.

During the one-hour meeting, they exchanged views on the critical situation in the Eurozone. In a statement to the media, Mr Jugnauth qualified the meeting as being “very cordial”.

“As the newly-appointed Minister of Finance and given that Mr Bheenick has recently resumed his post as Governor of the Bank of Mauritius, I think it was quite normal that we met. It was a courtesy call.” He added that the finance supremos discussed the international economic situation.

“We exchanged views. We also talked about the situation in the Eurozone. “I have known Mr Bheenick for a very long time and he is well aware of what is going on as far as the economic situation is concerned.

We are looking forward to working together within the legal parameters,” explained the minister. Asked by the media if they discussed the measures that will be taken by the government to contain the effect of the sliding Euro on Mauritian exports, Mr Jugnauth replied that he cannot disclose “confidential matters”.

As the press were entering the office of Mr Jugnauth, a smiling Mr Bheenick was seen leaving. He even came back to pose for a photo with the Minister of Finance. Mr Bheenick did not make any statement to the media. http://www.newsnow.mu/NewsView.asp?NID=6107
